University students are always looking for options to entertain themselves without spending a lot of money. Luckily, students in Seville have a whole range of possibilities at their fingertips.
From seeing a flamenco show to visiting the city’s main monuments, Seville is a city that always has something to offer without spending too much in return.
Here are some of the free activities and tours we recommend if you are a student in Seville:
1. Seville Cathedral and the Giralda
One of the most impressive works of art in the city is the Cathedral. It is the third largest Gothic church in the world. Inside the Cathedral is the mausoleum of Christopher Columbus, which is a point of interest for history buffs.
It also combines Moorish and Christian architecture, so it is a great exponent of Seville’s history. However, before entering the Cathedral, we advise you to climb the Giralda.
This tower functioned as the minaret of the mosque that was located in the same space. From its highest point, you will have a panoramic view of the city. You can even see the Guadalquivir river, the bullring and the Torre del Oro.
Here’s the most important fact: admission is only free on Mondays, from 16:30h. to 18:00h. You must book online a few days in advance.
2. Flamenco shows
You can’t live in Andalusia without attending a flamenco show. There are many tourist places where you can see this traditional dance, but in all of them you have to pay an entrance fee. The best way to cut costs is to go to a tapas bar in the evening, order something and wait for the show to start.
3. Plaza de España
Seville is known all over the world for this square, so you can’t miss it. As a curious fact, around the square, there are several benches representing with tiles the provinces of Spain. Take a look at them.
After this tour, you can venture into the Parque de María Luisa. It is a nice place to get some fresh air, as there is a lot of vegetation. The best time to walk around here is during spring, as the weather and the trees make the park fresh and pleasant.
4. Palaces of Seville
If you have a Monday afternoon free, why not visit three of the city’s most emblematic castles? Of course, you must book your free ticket online a few days in advance. In summer, the entrance timetable is from 16:00h. to 17:00h. while in winter, it is from 16:00h. to 18:00h.
On this visit, you will get to know:
- The Royal Alcazar
- The Palace of the Countess of Lebrija
- The Palace of Las Dueñas
Each has its own history and architecture. While the Real Alcázar blends Moorish, Gothic and Renaissance styles, the Palace of the Countess of Lebrija is notable for its Roman mosaics.
The Palacio de Las Dueñas is popular for having been home to the Duchess of Alba, one of the country’s best-known aristocrats.
5. Barrio de Santa Cruz
This is an old Jewish quarter with narrow, picturesque streets where a stroll is a great idea for any weekend afternoon. Walking through these streets will make you feel like you’re in another era. The yellow and white house in Plaza Alfaro is even said to be the inspiration for scenes from Romeo and Juliet.
6. Museum of the Inquisition
If you like history, visit the Museum of the Inquisition. This was once the most feared building in the city for being the seat of the Spanish Inquisition and for its medieval fortress-like appearance. It is open to the public at all times.
In this museum you will not only learn a little more about the history of the Inquisition. You will also learn about the so-called “heretics“; Jews and Muslims who claimed to have converted to Catholicism, but continued to practice their faith in secret.
7. Church of San Luis de los Franceses
Seville Cathedral is not the only impressive church in the city. The Church of San Luis de los Franceses also stands out for its baroque style and the gilded details of its interior. Its construction was dedicated to the King of France, Louis IX, which is why it is so extravagant inside.
Admission is only free on Sundays, from 16:00h to 20:00h, so it’s a great way to end the weekend.
Take note of these free plans for students in Seville, make a list and start enjoying the city while keeping your wallet in mind.
